Professional Deer Management
Effective deer management starts with understanding the land, the deer population and the impact they are having.
Woodland & Grant Support
We support woodland owners with professional assessments and management plans that can assist with relevant Countryside Stewardship grant applications.
CWS1 – Deer Management
Assessing deer populations, browsing pressure and woodland impacts, then developing practical management recommendations.
CWS3– Grey Squirrel Control
Assessing squirrel damage and developing professional control and monitoring programmes to help protect woodland.
Why Manage Deer?
Deer populations have increased significantly in many areas. Where numbers and browsing pressure become too high, the effects can include:
- Poor natural tree regeneration
- Damage to newly planted woodland
- Loss of ground flora and wildflowers
- Reduced habitat for birds, insects and mammals
- Increased woodland establishment costs
- Damage to agricultural and forestry crops
Effective management helps bring deer numbers and habitat into better balance while protecting long-term woodland and environmental objectives.
Deer Counts & Population Surveys
Accurate information is the foundation of a good management plan.
We can assess deer numbers, species, distribution, habitat use and browsing pressure using appropriate survey methods, including thermal imaging, observations, trail cameras and habitat assessments.
Our reports can include estimated population levels, species information, activity and movement, mapping and management recommendations.

Deer Cull Programmes
Where active management is required, we can provide planned professional deer cull programmes.
Every site is different, so programmes are based on population data, habitat condition, deer impacts, land objectives, seasonal movements and site-specific safety considerations.
We work professionally, safely and humanely, with appropriate risk assessment around public rights of way, neighbouring properties, livestock and other site hazards.
Cull records and management observations can be used to monitor progress and inform future recommendations.
Deer Management Plans
We produce practical, site-specific Deer Management Plans for woodlands, farms and estates.
Plans can consider:
- Deer species and population levels
- Habitat and woodland condition
- Browsing and damage
- Forestry and agricultural objectives
- Natural regeneration and woodland creation
- Conservation and biodiversity
- Public access and safety
- Existing management and neighbouring land/
Recommendations may include population and cull targets, seasonal management, monitoring, mapping, protective measures and ongoing review.
A Deer Management Plan should be a living document, developing as the site and deer population change.
